Description

ABSTRACT. Loanwords are tell-tale evidence of cultures in contact and sometimes in conflict. Cultural change evidenced in introduction of new items and complexes often calls for new words, which are borrowed from the language that already contains such terms. In Chicahuaxtla Trique such borrowings from Spanish are represented by the terms for 'horse' and 'burro'. On the other hand, loans that affect the social system or numerical system have more far reaching consequences as also seen in this article. INTRODUCTION. Chicahuaxtla Trique is the language spoken in the village of San Andres Chicauaxtla. It is also spoken in immediately surrounding villages and settlements in the districts of Putla and Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Mexico. Chicahuaxtla Trique is one of three Trique languages; the others are Copala Trique and Itunyoso Trique. Chicahuaxtla Trique is not yet threatened with extinction, but the inroads of Spanish are taking their toll. The next generation or two may witness a somewhat changed situation.
